Don't you hate it when you walk from one room to another and forget what you're in that room for? I'm not afraid to admit that this happens to me quite a bit. I can thank my dad for this awesome family trait. Why couldn't it have been rock hard abs instead? Anyway, it seems that when this happens anymore I just go with it and find something else to do. If it was important enough, I'll remember eventually. Take this photograph for example. I was in the process of doing something, but my son asked my 5 or 6 rapid fire questions. That was enough to make me forget to switch the laundry out of the washer and into the dryer. I took the opportunity to try out my home-made flash diffuser. I guess it beats cleaning the lint filter out on the dryer. I opened my wife's book and these words ironically jumped out at me begging to be photographed. I couldn't get the results I wanted. To get the disorienting look I had to use a large aperture setting to have a narrow depth of field. Either the top or bottom of the words were just out of focus. I was too lazy to get my tripod out of the car, so I came up with another soultion. I made the aperture smaller to increase the depth of field in order to get the whole subject in focus. Then in photoshop, I used numerous layers with varying gaussian blur settings and gradients in the layer masks to create the cool bokeh while keeping the subject in sharp focus. I compared it to the natural bokeh shots and it's hard to tell the difference between them.
